We continue to add to our Science and Engineering Fellowships and Scholarships Directory. We have over 50 listed now: for high school, bachelors, graduate and doctoral students as well as for post doctorates and faculty. A sampling of those listed:

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program
Includes full tuition and all required fees for three years as well as a stipend of $30,000 a year and a one time International Research Travel Allowance of $1,000. Approximately 1,000 awards are given out each year.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)
$30,000 per year, renewable up to three years, divided as follows: $21,000 student stipend, $4,000 travel allowance, $1,000 for health insurance, and $4,000 university allowance. Approximately 300 graduate students are supported annually.

Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Research Program (SMART)
Includes all university tuition and required fees as well as the following stipends: $22,500 per year for undergraduate students, $31,000 per year for Master’s candidates, and $38,000 per year for Doctoral candidates; tenure is given up to the time typically required to complete degree studies. It also offers a $1,000 book allowance. Between 30 and 100 awards are granted each year.

Intel Foundation PhD Fellowship Program
Select US universities are partnered with Intel to award approximately 40 fellowships a year. The fellowship is available for two years and covers a cash award for tuition, fees, and a stipend, and Intel laptop, an Intel mentor, an opportunity to participate in an Intel internship, and an invitation to the Fellowship Forum at Intel. This fellowship is available to students studying engineering, computer science and other technical majors that are focused on semiconductor technologies, micro-architecture, and communications.

NSF Fellow Profile: Steven Levitt

Steven Levitt, an NSF Fellow from 1992 to 1994, is a prominent economist best known for co-authoring the 2005 bestseller Freakonomics (Freakonomics blog). He is currently the Alvin H. Baum Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, director of the Becker Center, co-editor of the Journal of Political Economy published by the University of Chicago Press.

Levitt and his co-author, Stephen Dubner, explored a variety of topics in Freakonomics using analyses of statistics databases. The popularity of this book has made him one of the most well known economists among laymen. It was announced in 2007 that the two authors were working on a sequel.

Levitt’s other awards and honors include: named one of Time magazine’s “100 People Who Shape Our World” in 2006, named the Harry V. Roberts Statistical Advocate of the Year in 2006, the John Bates Clark Medal in 2003, the Garvin Prize in 2003, and the Duncan Black Prize in 2000. NDSEG Fellowship Application is Open

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship application is open.

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2008, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a graduate degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of the following disciplines:

* Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
* Biosciences
* Chemical Engineering
* Chemistry
* Civil Engineering
* Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
* Computer and Computational Sciences
* Electrical Engineering
* Geosciences
* Materials Science and Engineering
* Mathematics
* Mechanical Engineering
* Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
* Oceanography
* Physics
