Emory College senior and award recipient Jason Haensly said he thought it was a joke as well because he heard the results on Apr. 1… Haensly said his research would explore the connection from the brain’s cortex to basal ganglia to thalamus and back to cortex, an area of research he described as “woefully understudied.”

Suanda is focusing his research on studying word-learning strategies with young children, specifically the cognitive correlation between learning words and the use of symbolic gestures. He attended Wesleyan University as an undergraduate, obtained a degree in psychology, and is currently working with the psychology department’s cognition and development program at GSAS with his adviser Laura Namy.Hammock received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Pomona College, and is now pursuing educational studies with her adviser Magnia George. Her study will focus on school reform models and how they prevent or promote science education programs for children. Hammock said her study was inspired by her work as a first-grade teacher in an Atlanta school that didn’t emphasize science education. She said it made her consider “why elementary science education, on a broader scale, is put on the back burner.”
