American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowships

More than 200 fellowships and grants with a value between $6,000 and $30,000 awarded annually.

The fellowships are open to women in the following areas of study: architecture, computer/information sciences, engineering (there is also an engineering dissertation award which is given), and mathematics/statistics. The fellowship awards between $6,000 and $12,000 for Master’s or First Professional awards and $20,000 for Engineering Dissertation awards and $30,000 for the Post Doctoral Leave Fellowship.

Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Bridge to the Doctorate

Up to 8 fellowships total for all 3 phases with an Anticipated Funding Amount of $6,000,000

The program is limited to alliances of academic institutions which have exemplary records over several years of enrolling and retaining significant numbers of undergraduate students underrepresented in STEM disciplines. One institution must be designated as the lead institution for the project. A single institution may participate in only one alliance. Individual institutions and single departments are ineligible for support.

The program goals are accomplished through the formation of alliances. Phase I awards place emphasis on aggregate baccalaureate production. Phase II awards augment the Phase I emphasis with attention to individual student retention and progression to baccalaureate degrees. Phase III awards augment the Phase I and Phase II with attention to aggregate student progression to graduate school entry.

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) – Merck Science Initiative

At least 37 awards between $35,000 and $85,000

The UNCF • Merck Science Initiative awards scholarships and fellowships at three levels:

A. UNCF • Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards

Awards up to $35,000. At least 15 scholarship awards were granted in 2009. Each award provides up to $35,000, which includes up to $25,000 towards tuition, room and board, and billable fees. Award recipients will be selected based on their GPA, their demonstrated interest in their own scientific education and a career in scientific research, and their ability to perform in a laboratory environment.

B. UNCF • Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships

Awards up to $52,000. At least 12 dissertation fellowships will be awarded in 2010. Each fellowship provides up to a maximum of $52,000, which includes a Stipend of up to $42,000 for the Fellow and a Research Grant of up to $10,000 to support the research needs of the Fellow. The fellowship stipend is intended to cover from 12-24 months of fellowship tenure. A maximum of $30,000 in stipend may be received in any 12 month period. The Fellow must be engaged in and within 1-3 years of completing the dissertation research having successfully completed all qualifying exams.

A UNCF • Merck Selection Committee consisting of educators and Merck scientists will select the awards based on academic ability, record of accomplishment, and the soundness of the proposed doctoral research plan.

C. UNCF • Merck Postdoctoral Science Research Fellowships

Awards up to $85,000. At least 10 postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in 2010. Each fellowship provides a maximum of $85,000, which includes a Stipend of up to $70,000 and a Research Grant of up to $15,000 to the hosting department. The stipend is intended to provide 12-24 months of fellowship tenure. A maximum of $50,000 of stipend may be received in any 12 month period. The Research Grant is intended to support the research needs of the Fellow.

McKnight Doctoral Fellowships

50 fellowships with a value up to $17,000 awarded annually

Each year, up to 50 fellowships are awarded to African American doctoral students at one of nine participating Florida universities. The fellowship can be renewed for up to five years and includes tuition up to $5,000 and an annual stipend of $12,000. The eligible fields of study are: agriculture, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, engineering, marine biology, mathematics, physics, and psychology.

L’Oreal USA Fellowships for Women in Science

5 fellowships with values up to $60,000 awarded annually

Each year, five female postdoctoral researchers are awarded a grants of up to $60,000 to put towards their research. Applicants must be female and be studying one of the following fields: life sciences, physical/material sciences, engineering and technology, computer science, or mathematics.

Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship

Approximately 20 scholarships with a value of $10,000 awarded annually

Approximately 20 awards of $10,000 are given out annually to students who are either Hispanic or of Hispanic background. To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a degree in either computer science or computer engineering. Awardees are also invited to attend a networking retreat at the Google Headquarters in California.

Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study

5 fellowships per year with a value of  $27,000 (up to 5 years)

For the 2010-2011 fellowship year, the total amount awarded to each Gilliam Fellow is $44,000. HHMI provides the funds to the fellowship institution, which in turn pays the fellow. The current annual stipend is $27,000. There is no dependency allowance. In addition, HHMI provides the fellow an annual allowance of $3,500, which can be used for health care expenses, books and supplies, journal subscriptions, a computer and computer-related expenses, travel to scientific meetings, professional fees or dues, tuition for special summer courses, or other purposes relevant to a fellow’s study.

The Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study provide full support for up to five years of study toward a Ph.D. for outstanding students who are from groups underrepresented in the sciences or from disadvantaged backgrounds. Gilliam fellows attend the university of their choice and work alongside distinguished scientists.

Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship

$63,000 awarded annually

This fellowship is open to doctoral students in a microbiology program who have completed one year of study, are members of the American Society for Microbiology, and belong to one of the following historically underrepresented groups: African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, or Pacific Islander. Chosen fellows will receive a fellowship for $63,000, given over a three year time span, broken up into six separate stipend payments. This money cannot be used for tuition or other fees.

American Political Science Association Minority Fellows Program

Up to 12 fellowships with a value of $4,000 awarded annually

This fellowship is open to first time political science doctoral students from one of the following racial or ethnic groups: African American, Asian Pacific American, Latino/Latina, or Native American. Up to twelve awards are given out annually. Fellows are given a stipend that totals $4,000, with $2,000 given during at the end of the Fellow’s first graduate year and $2,000 given at the end of the Fellow’s second graduate year.

Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management Minority Service Institutions Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Academic Stipend $ 700 Monthly, Tuition and Fees $8,000/year maximum Each Term

A monthly stipend in the amount of $700 is sent directly to the Scholar during the academic year. A Scholar’s stipend will be increased to $1400 per month during the summer internship assignment to cover the additional cost of being away from his/her home institution, provided that the internship site is more than 50 miles from their home, college or university. The one-year scholarship award may ordinarily be renewed annually up to a maximum of 24 months. The program has an absolute requirement that Scholars complete a summer internship assignment at the Yucca Mountain Site, DOE Headquarters, the United States Geological Survey, or another DOE facility performing work for the OCRWM program. Internships are typically held during the summer following the first year of academic study.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Foundation Scholarship

5 awards, $2,500 awarded annually
This scholarship is open to high school seniors who are members of American Indian tribes or considered American Indian by the tribes from whom descent is claimed, who reside in states serviced by the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation and its affiliated companies: Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, and Washington. This award lasts for 4 years or until completion of baccalaureate degree, whichever occurs first. The student must major in a field from the following: business, engineering, math, medicine/health administration, natural/physical sciences, technology and education. The award amount is $2,500 per year, with 5 awards given out each year.

Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Educational Foundation Predoctoral Awards

Between 5 and 10 awards with a value of $1,000 awarded annually

The AWIS Educational Awards Committee offers awards to support women graduate student pursuing PhDs and planning a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM – except Psysics). About 5-10 AWIS graduate awards in the amount of $1,000 are given each year. In all cases, applicants must meet the general eligibility with one to 2 ½ years of work remaining to complete the degree.

The Google Anita Borg Scholarship

Awards up to $10,000

Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a $10,000 award for the 2010-2011 academic year. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate’s academic background and demonstrated leadership. Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field.

Amelia Earhart Graduate Fellowship Awards

$6000 awarded annually

The fellowship of  $6,000 may be used for tuition, books and fees, or living expenses. The award may be used at any university or college offering accredited graduate courses and degrees in aerospace studies. Fellowships may be renewed for an additional year by a current Fellow and will undergo the same application and evaluation procedures as first-time applicants.

Howard Brown Rickard Scholarship

1 scholarship with a value of $3,000 awarded annually

This scholarship is for blind students who are studying law, medicine, engineering, architecture, or the natural sciences. One fellow is selected each year for the $3,000 prize. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply.

Air and Waste Management Association Thomas E. Murphy Memorial Scholarship

$2,000 awarded annually
The scholarship is open to graduate students studying environmental science in one of the following states: Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, or Nebraska. The award amount is $2,000 for a one year period.

Renate W. Chasman Scholarship

$2,000 awarded annually

This scholarship has one award of $2,000 which is given out annually. Eligible applicants must be women who have taken a break in their formal education and are now returning to study in one of the following fields: the natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics. They must also be residents of Nassau County, Suffolk County, Brooklyn, or Queens.

A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Award value between $1,000 and $2,000
This award is given to American Indian or Native Alaskan students who, as undergraduate or graduate students, are working toward a degree in the sciences, engineering, medicine, natural resources or math. This is a one-year scholarship with a reward of $1,000 or undergraduates, $2,000 for graduate students.
