National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s

Congressional Fellowship in Child Development

Stipends begin at $73,100, depending on experience

The Society for Research in Child Development Congressional Fellowship Program will provide each Fellow with an allowance of up to $1,000 for moving expenses, a professional development fund of $2,800, as well as an allowance of up to $5,500 for health-related insurance benefits (individual coverage).

The SRCD Congressional Fellowship Program is designed to provide greater interaction between the developmental research community and Congress. Fellows spend one year working as a Legislative Assistant on the staff of a Congressional committee, on the staff of a member of Congress, or in a Congressional support agency that works directly for members or committees of Congress. Fellows may also work as staff on Congressional committees that deal with issues concerning children and families.

Genetics and Public Policy Fellowship

Annual stipend of $60,000

Professionals studying genetics who are early in their career are eligible for this opportunity. If chosen, the fellow will research and help influence policy issues related to human genetics. During the 16 month fellowship, the fellow will receive an annual stipend of $60,ooo plus benefits.

Jefferson Science Fellowship

A per diem of up to $50,000 for a full year

$10,000 will be made available to the Fellow for travel associated with their assignment(s).

To be eligible, a Fellow must be a scientist, technologist, or engineer holding a tenured faculty position at a U.S. college or university. Each Fellow will spend one year at the U.S. Department of  State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for an on-site assignment in Washington, D.C. that may also involve extended stays at U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions. After this year, Jefferson Science Fellow will return to his/her academic career, but will remain available to the U.S. Department of State/USAID for short-term projects over the following five years. Interns will work on projects related to science, technology, and engineering and will also become knowledgeable concerning policy decisions.

California Science and Technology Policy Fellowship

Annual stipend of $45,000

This opportunity is open to those who have earned a PhD in a physical, biological or social science OR those who have earned an MS in an engineering discipline, plus at least three years post-degree experience. During the one year internship, fellows will work in a California State Legislature office, working with legislators and their staff on issues related to the applicant’s field. Fellows are required to live in Sacramento for the duration of the internship. In addition to the $45,000 annual stipend, fellows will also receive up to $4,000 for moving costs.

(NOAA) Teacher at Sea Program

20 – 30 applicants chosen each year

Participants can expect to be at sea anywhere from one week to one month, with the average cruise lasting 12-14 days. To be considered for becoming a NOAA Teacher at Sea, you will be expected to provide evidence of good health as determined by a completed medical history and have passed a TB test within 12 months of your sailing date, and be currently employed teachers, full-time, from K-12 education, community college, college, and university level, adult education teachers, and museum and aquaria educators.

All necessary travel costs are paid for by NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program.  While airfare is paid for up front by the government, all other costs are reimbursed, including transportation costs, hotel costs, and per diem allowance. Those chosen for the program are at sea for one week to one month.

Astronomy Research Based Science Education Program

Approximately 20 applicants chosen each year

High school teachers across the United States are eligible to apply for this competitive program. Those chosen will first be trained in an online distance learning course focusing on different aspects of astronomy and then they will attend a 10 day workshop in Tucson, Arizona at Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Hellman Fellowship in Science and  Technology Policy

Stipends are competitive and commensurate with experience

Appointments are for a one-year term (with a possibility of renewal) at the American Academy in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in an area of science or engineering and have some experience or a demonstrated interest in an area related to science and technology policy. Masters degrees may be considered in the fields of engineering and computer science.

Early career science and engineering professionals are eligible to apply for the Hellman Fellowship. While working as a fellow, individuals will work with scientists and policy experts on national and international policy issues related to science, engineering, and technology. The site lists the current projects that a fellow can choose from to work on. The stipend offered is competitive with similar fellowship programs.
